Generally fuel isnt an issue for a single hop jump, but if you try to go someplace a bit farther away it can cost more fuel than you have. The distance you see on your grav drive is for a single hop, with no intermediate star systems. My cargo is currently at 256/450. hold alt and in the bottom left corner you can use wasd to deplete other systems with w key so that you can add more to grav with s key. I moved on via the star map, dunno if that's a separate travel function or what the game considers a grav jump. OMG this game is ridiculous.... you literally have to Google every little thing about how to play it....
